STANFORD FOOTBALL PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Your Son is My Son. My Son is Your Son.

In the last 9 months, around 20 families reported having been affected by bike theft and/or destruction on Stanford campus. (Some of the families were affected more than once.) This resulted in around $50,000 worth of lost or destroyed property. Some families have contacted authorities directly, some have asked to remain anonymous, and some have provided details they don’t mind being shared. Parents reported the thefts have led to financial hardships, anxiety/depression, physical hardships due to the time of practices, work-outs and school and the large geographic lay-out of the university. Parents also reported the overwhelming concern of safety with the boldness of the thieves (one left a machete), some stole in broad daylight, and the players going after their own bikes because of little or no response from police. Some parents are questioning the school being an open campus due to the safety concerns on and off campus.

Update:
-In December we reached out to the Stanford Football office about this topic and have reached out to them for again for help. We asked that they help advocate for our players with Stanford administration by reinforcing the need for more secure bike corrals, surveillance, and prosecution of thieves.

-We have reached out to the Stanford Parents Club for assessment of the general student body’s experience and they confirmed the problem is systemic within the university campus. They do not take on any action for or against the university and recommended our parents contact school agencies directly:

-One of our parents who reached out to Stanford Administration received the following in an email response to this topic which addresses some of the school’s response.
"DPS holds regular meetings with representatives from the private security companies that provide security services on campus to keep them informed about crime trends. These private security contractors provide security services under contract with various departments on campus, including the areas around student residences.
DPS encourages the use of Garage 529 (https://project529.com/garage), a program designed to use crowd sourcing to help victims of theft recover their property. DPS provides registration free of charge with proof of ownership.
Ability to report crimes to 911 via text.
I am pleased to share that the university has plans to install additional cameras at the entrances to all student residences over the next couple of years. This represents a shift for the community, which has historically placed a high value on privacy."
